Telling Nigerian music fans to respect their legends is what Terry G says

Terry G, a veteran of the Afrobeats scene, has called on his fellow Nigerians to honour music icons even after they've faded from the public eye.

He bemoaned the fact that Nigerians are so ready to write off musical greats as "outdated."

Unlike in Africa, he noticed that legends are revered and their accomplishments are properly recognised in the West.

Afrobeats, no matter how wonderful it gets, would eventually become irrelevant if Africans, especially Nigerians, do not respect their music icons, the Akpako Master warned.

A message that said, "I hear people say, 'Your time don pass!'—and it sounds like brain damage!" was written on his X account.

Legends are held in the highest regard in Western culture.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z are not considered old-fashioned. Their influence is recognised.

However, we Africans, and Nigerians in particular, are fast to cast aside our own.

That's why our forefathers were vile, whereas our Western counterparts were divine.

It's high time we ditch that way of thinking.

No matter how wonderful you were in the past, your value will diminish if you cease improving the lives of others around you and yourself.

"We need to step it up."
