The Swiss government has pledged $1.22 million to help flood victims in Nigeria across all sectors.
In a statement, Mr. Nicolas Lang, the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, declared the development, saying that it was a reaction to the recent flooding that had devastated several states in Nigeria, particularly Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in the country's northeast.
He said that the United Nations-run Nigeria Humanitarian Fund will be the conduit for the financial assistance.
The Nigerian government's response to the issue will be bolstered by this contribution. People impacted by the flood will receive aid from multiple sectors to help them with their immediate necessities. Lang said that this will cover protective services, temporary housing, food security, water and sanitation to stop the spread of cholera, and health.
With satisfaction, Mr. Lang underlined Switzerland's ability to help alleviate the pain of those afflicted by the floods.
With our donation to the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund, we are standing in solidarity with the government's endeavors to offer urgent aid that can save lives. One of the cornerstones of our strong and enduring relationship with Nigeria has been providing humanitarian aid.
Furthermore, he mentioned that the Swiss government is looking into possible methods to support initiatives to improve disaster readiness.
I have faith that the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund can effectively deliver urgent help to the thousands of impacted individuals in critical need of humanitarian aid, thanks to its capacity to quickly distribute cash and choose the most appropriate partners, including local groups.
As a reminder, on September 9, 2024, a terrible flood ravaged Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, after the Alau dam erupted. The floodwaters washed away 70% of the farmlands, and many people went missing. Hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless as a result.
