A "horrible ordeal" was endured by the Super Eagles team in Libya, according to Augustine Eguavoen, the club's caretaker coach.
More than two hours' journey separated the hostage situation at an abandoned airfield from the location of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between the Mediterranean Knights and the Nigerian squad.
They cut off the team's supply of food and water.
On Monday night, the Super Eagles departed from the match and went back to Nigeria.
Upon reaching Nigeria on Monday, Eguavoen expressed his gratitude to the Libyans for releasing them, but he also warned that they would never want to endure what they did throughout the ordeal, which lasted 18 to 20 hours.
Because of the hostage situation, we were unable to participate in the match.
"I find it seriously incomprehensible that they would behave in this manner, given that we are aware of the power of football to bring people together across the globe."
